Meet The Sanctuary Horses

Jewels
Age: 25 years old
Breed: Grey Quarter Horse Mare
Jewels holds a very special place in our hearts — she was my first personal horse, acquired when I was just seven years old. Born under tragic circumstances, Jewels lost her dam at only four days old, and I had the honor of bottle-raising her. From that moment, she ignited my true passion for horses, particularly senior horses who deserve love and care in their later years.
Now fully retired due to arthritis in her front knees, Jewels enjoys a carefully managed routine to keep her comfortable and healthy. She receives daily Equinox and DuHou supplements, regular acupuncture from our wonderful veterinarian, and a special diet including ground flax, Purina Amplify, chia, mineral oil, and 6 pounds of Triple Crown Senior feed each day.
Despite her age and arthritis, Jewels remains a gentle, loving presence in the herd, embodying the heart and spirit of our sanctuary and reminding us why every senior horse deserves a life of care, comfort, and compassion. 💖

Chip
Age: 22 years old
Breed: Paint Gelding
Chip is a resilient and loving gelding who has come a long way since arriving at our sanctuary. Four years ago, he was facing euthanasia due to aggressive behavior, but we soon discovered that his challenges were the result of years of being locked in a stall, which took a toll on his mental health.
When Chip arrived, he was also loaded with sand, so we carefully sand-purged him and treated him for ulcers to restore his digestive health. Last year, he was diagnosed with minor kissing spine, which we’ve been managing with injections, and we are exploring surgical options to keep him as comfortable as possible.
Today, Chip thrives in our care, showing a gentle and affectionate side that was hidden for too long. He enjoys daily attention, soft pastures, and the freedom to just be a horse, proving that with patience, love, and proper care, even the most challenging cases can find happiness and peace. 💛

Charlie
Age: 25 years old
Breed: Paint Gelding
Charlie is a gentle giant at 17.2 hands, with a calm and shy demeanor that has always been part of his personality. We welcomed him to our sanctuary when he was just 2 years old, having never been handled before, and have watched him grow into the kind and patient horse he is today.
Due to back issues, Charlie has retired from work, but he continues to enjoy a happy and comfortable life thanks to regular acupuncture and chiropractic care. He thrives in our peaceful environment, surrounded by friends, love, and the care he needs to feel his best every day.

Caddo
Age: 10 years old
Breed: Quarter Horse
Caddo is a sweet and resilient Quarter Horse with a heart full of love. He was unable to continue as a working horse due to an abnormality in a vertebra in his neck, which made movement painful and difficult.
While there is no surgery to correct the condition, Caddo receives medications and regular bodywork to keep him comfortable and thriving. Today, he enjoys a happy, peaceful life at our sanctuary, spending his days with friends, receiving gentle care, and being free from the demands of work.
Caddo is a wonderful reminder that even horses with physical challenges can have joyful, fulfilling lives with the right care and environment. 💛

Cisco
Age: 10 years old
Breed: Buckskin Gelding
Cisco is a sweet and gentle buckskin gelding with a heart as big as his spirit. We purchased him last year to be a lesson horse, but after helping him reach a healthy weight and having his teeth floated, we noticed he wasn’t moving correctly. Upon investigating his history, we learned that Cisco has had 10 homes and, unfortunately, has hospitalized four people — a sign that his challenges run deeper than anyone realized.
Despite this, Cisco has an incredibly sweet temperament and a love for people, especially children. He enjoys being led, pampered, and even having bows put in his hair by our daughter. X-rays revealed some lameness issues in his left hind leg, but nothing definitive, so we are moving forward with ultrasounds to check for soft tissue concerns.
No matter the outcome, Cisco will enjoy a peaceful retirement with us, surrounded by love, care, and the calm life he truly deserves. 🐴💛

Z
Age: 25 years old
Breed: Clydesdale/Morgan
Z is a gentle giant with a heart as big as his 25 years. He joined our sanctuary in March 2025, arriving underweight and having lived in a small run for too long. Since coming to us, Z has been thriving — steadily gaining weight and enjoying life out on 20 acres with six other horses, where he can stretch, graze, and just be a horse.
His personality has flourished in his new home. Once quiet and reserved, Z is now spunky, happy, and full of life, showing just how much a peaceful environment and proper care can transform a horse. He was previously used as a therapy horse, but with age comes special dietary needs, and the facility could no longer keep up with his requirements. At our sanctuary, Z is finally able to relax, eat well, and enjoy every day surrounded by friends and love. 💛

Sami
Age: Approximately 18–20 years old
Breed: Tennessee Walker (Bay Roan Mare)
Sami is a gentle and resilient mare who came to us through a law enforcement seizure after being neglected in a breeding situation. She arrived unhandled and underweight, having spent years being used as a broodmare without proper care.
As a result of her difficult past, Sami has arthritis in her hind end, a reminder of the hard work and challenges she endured over the years. Despite everything, she is sweet, curious, and beginning to trust people, showing her incredible capacity to heal with love and patience.
With her age and history, Sami has truly earned a life of peace, care, and pampering. At our sanctuary, she is finally able to enjoy a retirement filled with love, comfort, and the gentle attention she has always deserved. 💕

Brandi
Age: Approximately 8–10 years old
Breed: Bay Mare
Brandi is a sweet and social mare who came to us as a surrender from a local rescue after being used primarily as a broodmare. She was started under saddle, but unfortunately, she was found to be unsafe to ride after bucking multiple riders off.
Brandi is currently being evaluated by our veterinarian, including tests, x-rays, and ultrasounds, to see if there is an underlying reason for her behavior. Regardless of the results, Brandi’s gentle nature, love of attention, and social personality have earned her a permanent place at our sanctuary. She enjoys being caught, loved on, and spending time with her herd mates, and we are committed to giving her a safe and happy life for the long term. 💛

Ranger
Age: 35 years old
Breed: Quarter Horse
Ranger is the oldest member of our sanctuary family — a wise and gentle soul who has truly earned his peaceful retirement. When he was sold at auction, Ranger was severely underweight and in need of love and care. Thankfully, a kind friend purchased him and helped him begin his recovery, putting weight back on and giving him the second chance he so deserved.
Now living at our sanctuary, Ranger continues to thrive among the other senior horses, spending his days grazing freely in open pastures and soaking up the attention he loves so much.
Ranger is a favorite among the kids, who adore brushing him, giving him treats, and learning how to safely lead, groom, and pick hooves with his patient guidance. His gentle nature and steady spirit make him a wonderful teacher — and a shining reminder that every horse, no matter their age, still has so much love and joy to share. 🐴❤️

Mikey
Age: 28 years old
Breed: Quarter Horse Gelding
Mikey is a kind-hearted and loyal Quarter Horse who spent most of his life working hard as a ranch horse. After many years of dedication, arthritis made it too painful for him to continue that lifestyle, and he’s now happily enjoying a well-deserved retirement at our sanctuary.
In addition to arthritis, Mikey also lives with Cushing’s disease, a condition that requires careful management through daily medication and a specialized diet. Thanks to this attentive care — and plenty of love — Mikey is thriving in his golden years.
Gentle, wise, and full of heart, Mikey enjoys peaceful days with his herd, soft brushes from visitors, and the comfort of knowing he’s finally home for good. 🤎

Tru
Age: 28 years old
Breed: Gelding
Tru is one of the sweetest souls at our sanctuary. Retired due to arthritis, this gentle gelding now enjoys a well-deserved life of comfort and care. Because he’s a hard keeper, Tru is on a special high-calorie diet to help him maintain his weight and stay healthy — and our team lovingly makes sure he gets everything he needs to feel his best.
Despite his age and challenges, Tru’s spirit shines bright. He absolutely loves visiting senior centers, where his calm presence brings smiles, laughter, and connection to everyone he meets. His patience and kindness make him a favorite among residents, and he seems to know just how to lift their hearts.
Tru reminds us every day that age is just a number, and that compassion — both given and received — heals in the most beautiful ways. 💚

Athena
Age: Approximately 18 years old
Breed: Miniature horse
Athena joined our sanctuary family in October 2024, arriving in heartbreaking condition after years of neglect. Her hooves had not been properly cared for in a very long time — so much so that nearly seven pounds of overgrown hoof had to be carefully removed. X-rays revealed the extent of the damage, and her recovery will take many months, possibly up to a year, as we gently correct what was done to her poor feet.
Despite all she has been through, Athena’s gentle spirit shines. She now wears Cloud Boots to help protect her tender hooves and is on a two-week trimming schedule to support healthy growth and healing. She has also had her teeth floated and is enjoying regular meals, comfort, and the loving attention she’s always deserved.
Athena’s resilience and quiet strength embody the very heart of what our sanctuary stands for — compassion, patience, and the promise of a better life. 💜

Munch
Age: 30 years old
Breed: Paint Horse
Munch is a beloved elder at our sanctuary with a heart as big as his years of service. For most of his life, this kind and gentle Paint spent his days teaching children and adults how to ride, patiently helping beginners discover the joy of horses.
Now in his well-earned retirement, Munch enjoys spending his days grazing peacefully in the pasture with his herd mates — no schedules, no saddles, and plenty of love. Though he no longer gives riding lessons, he still adores spending time with children. His calm and trustworthy nature makes him the perfect teacher for kids learning how to safely be around horses.
Munch especially loves being groomed, often closing his eyes in contentment as little hands brush his coat. His story is a beautiful reminder that the horses who once gave so much to people deserve to live out their golden years in peace and comfort. ❤️

Meet Moon Pie
Age: 12 years old
Breed: Quarter Horse
Moon Pie is a beautiful and gentle Quarter Horse whose journey brought him to our sanctuary after being diagnosed with Wobbler Syndrome — a neurological condition that causes spinal cord compression, leading to uncoordinated movement and balance issues.
Although his condition means he can no longer be ridden or live a typical working horse life, Moon Pie continues to shine in his own special way. His calm demeanor and curious spirit touch the hearts of everyone who meets him.
Here at the sanctuary, Moon Pie enjoys peaceful days surrounded by friends, receiving the care, love, and understanding he deserves. His story is a reminder that every horse — no matter their challenges — has immense value and beauty just as they are. 💫

Peggy Sue
Age: 12 years old
Breed: Quarter Horse Mare
Peggy Sue is a sweet and resilient Quarter Horse who faces each day with quiet strength and grace. She lives with DSLD (Degenerative Suspensory Ligament Desmitis) — a chronic condition that affects her ligaments and connective tissues, causing pain and lameness.
While there is no cure for DSLD, Peggy Sue receives special care, regular trims, and supportive supplements to keep her comfortable and happy. Thanks to this gentle routine and a peaceful environment, she enjoys her days surrounded by friends and the loving care she deserves.
Peggy Sue’s calm presence and tender eyes seem to reflect her inner strength. She reminds everyone she meets that even in the face of challenges, there is beauty, grace, and a reason to keep shining. 🌸

Chief
Age: 11 years old
Breed: Quarter Horse Gelding
Chief is a handsome Quarter Horse with a strong spirit and a big personality. Earlier in life, Chief was “cowboyed” and roughly “broke” rather than gently trained, which left him with some understandable behavioral challenges under saddle. Despite his tough start, Chief has shown us that with patience, respect, and kindness, even the most misunderstood horses can begin to heal.
Chief knows what he likes — he’s a picky horse with clear preferences and a strong sense of who he is. He doesn’t thrive in small pens or with every group of horses, but we’ve found the perfect match for him — a safe, peaceful herd with plenty of pasture, thanks to the generosity of our neighbor.
Though he can be selective with his equine friends, Chief has a soft spot for children, often showing a gentler, more affectionate side when little ones are near. His story reminds us that every horse, no matter their past, deserves the chance to live life on their own terms — surrounded by safety, understanding, and love. 🐴
